How to use the Audiogram Plotter
- Find the table of thresholds on the hearing test report. Each number is a level in decibels hearing level (dB HL) for one ear at one pitch.
- Type the right ear numbers into the top row and the left ear numbers into the bottom row, matching the frequency columns. Leave any untested pitch empty.
- Turn on the 3000 and 6000 Hz columns if the report includes them, and switch on the speech banana overlay to see where everyday speech sounds usually sit.
- Read the plain language summary under the chart, then download the chart as a PNG or open the print view to keep a copy.
Why use ZillaKit's Audiogram Plotter?
A hearing test report is usually handed over as a small grid of numbers, and a grid of numbers is hard to picture. An audiogram turns those same numbers into a shape: pitch runs across the chart from low to high, loudness runs down the chart, and the further down a point sits the louder a sound has to be before it is heard. Seeing that shape makes a report far easier to talk about, whether you are a parent trying to understand a child's results, a student learning to read audiograms, or someone who simply wants to make sense of their own test before the follow up appointment.
This plotter draws the chart exactly the way clinics do. Frequency is spaced logarithmically across the horizontal axis, hearing level runs downward from -10 dB HL at the top to 120 dB HL at the bottom, the right ear is drawn as red circles joined by red lines, and the left ear is drawn as blue crosses joined by blue lines. Optional shaded bands mark the ranges commonly labelled normal, mild, moderate, moderately severe, severe and profound, so a point's position immediately suggests the wording a clinician would use. The optional speech banana shows the region where conversational speech sounds usually fall, with a handful of phonemes placed in their conventional spots, which is often the clearest way to explain why some sounds are missed while others are not.
Everything runs in your browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, never stored on a server and never attached to a name unless you choose to type one into the optional chart label. There is no account to create and no software to install. The chart is drawn on a plain white background so it stays readable when printed or pasted into a letter, and the PNG download gives you a clean image at a decent resolution. The plot and the summary are free to use as often as you like, and the chart itself is drawn instantly as you type, so you can correct a typo and watch the shape update immediately.
FAQ
Is this an actual hearing test?
No. This tool only draws a chart from numbers you type in and describes those numbers in everyday words. It cannot measure hearing, and a browser on a phone or laptop cannot produce calibrated test tones. A real hearing test needs calibrated equipment and a trained clinician.
What is the four frequency average shown in the summary?
It is the average of the thresholds at 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz for one ear, often written as PTA4. Clinics use an average like this as a quick single number that describes the overall level of hearing loss. If some of those four pitches are missing, the tool averages the ones that are present and says so.
Which symbols and colours does the chart use?
It follows the usual convention for air conduction results: red circles for the right ear and blue crosses for the left ear, with matching lines joining the points that were tested. Bone conduction, masking symbols and no response markers are not covered by this tool.
What is the speech banana?
It is a shaded region drawn across the middle of an audiogram that roughly covers the pitch and loudness of ordinary conversational speech. If a person's thresholds sit below part of that region, the speech sounds in that area are likely to be hard to hear, which helps explain patterns such as missing quiet high pitched sounds like s and f.
Do the severity labels tell me how much hearing loss there is?
They show the ranges commonly used to describe averages, but classifications vary between countries and clinics, and a label on its own says very little about how well someone hears in real situations. Treat the words as a rough guide and rely on the clinician who ran the test for anything that matters.
Are my numbers uploaded anywhere?
No. All plotting and text is generated locally in your browser with JavaScript and canvas drawing. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is saved when you close the page.
