The labels stay with the original page numbers
This catches people out, so it is worth saying plainly. Each thumbnail is labelled with the page number it had in the file you opened. Move a page up the grid and the label does not change. A tile marked "Page 9" sitting in the third slot means the ninth page of your original document will come out third.
The same is true of the deletion boxes. Ticking the box on "Page 4" removes original page 4 no matter where you dragged it to, so you can reorder first and delete second, or the other way around, and get the same answer either way.
Because of that, the grid never renumbers itself while you work. If you want to see the new numbering, download the file and open it.
How the range field behaves
The text box next to the grid accepts page numbers and ranges separated by commas. 3 on its own works. 2,5-7 ticks four boxes: pages 2, 5, 6 and 7. Spaces around a hyphen are ignored, so 5 - 7 is fine.
A backwards range is accepted too. Typing 9-6 counts down and ticks 6, 7, 8 and 9. Nothing else gets through: letters, the word "all", "last", "odd", "even" and open-ended forms like 5- all produce an error instead of a guess, and so does any number below 1 or above the page count of the file you opened.
Marking is additive. Type one range, apply it, type another, apply that as well, and both sets stay ticked. Clear marks wipes every tick in one go but leaves your page ordering alone.
Why the edited file is barely smaller
Deleting half the pages from a 10 MB report will not usually give you a 5 MB file, and that surprises people who expect a straight proportion.
Part of it is simple: pages differ wildly in weight. One full-bleed photograph can outweigh forty pages of plain text. Throwing out the text pages hardly dents the total.
The other part is how PDFs store things. Fonts, colour profiles and images live in a shared pool of objects that pages point at. Rebuilding a document keeps the objects the surviving pages still reference. If a font was used once on a page you deleted but also once on a page you kept, the whole font stays. Drop every page that used a 30 MB image and that image does go, but a scattered deletion often removes very little weight.
If the goal is a smaller file rather than fewer pages, Compress PDF is the better second step after you have finished trimming here.
What this tool will not do
You cannot delete every page. Tick them all and you get a refusal, because a PDF with zero pages is not a valid document.
Password-protected files are rejected when you open them, with a message saying so. Strip the encryption using whatever program the document came from, then try again.
There is no rotation control here. If a page is sideways it will still be sideways afterwards, and Rotate PDF handles that. There is no way to insert pages either. To bring pages in from elsewhere, save your trimmed file and then use Merge PDF.
Every thumbnail is drawn on a canvas, one after another, and re-drawn each time you move a page. On a 200 page document that takes a noticeable moment, and on a phone a long scanned file can use enough memory to make the tab reload. For very long documents a desktop PDF editor with a virtualised page panel will feel much better.
Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device.
A typical session
You scan a 14 page contract on a flatbed. Pages 1 and 8 come out doubled because the feeder grabbed twice, and page 13 is the blank back of a signature sheet. You open the file, type 2,9,13, apply it, glance at the greyed-out tiles to confirm the right three are marked, and download. The status line reports 11 pages kept and 3 deleted, and -edited is appended to the name in the output field.
Questions
Can I reorder without deleting anything?
Yes. Leave every box unticked, arrange the tiles with the arrows, and the download button simply rebuilds the document in the new sequence.
Does the text stay selectable after editing?
Yes. Pages are copied whole rather than converted to images, so searchable text stays searchable and vector graphics stay sharp. A scanned page had no text to begin with, and it will not gain any here.
Why does the page count in the grid not match my reader?
Some documents print a number on the page that differs from its position in the file, usually because of a cover or a roman-numeral preface. The grid always counts physical positions from 1, so trust the tile labels rather than the ink.
What happens to bookmarks and form fields?
The document outline is not carried into the rebuilt file, and fillable form fields may stop working once their pages are copied. Flatten forms before editing them if the filled values matter.
Can I get the deleted pages back?
Not from the download, but your original file is untouched on disk. Open it again and start over.
