How to use the Easy Read Builder
- Give the document a title, and add your organisation name and a date if the title page needs them.
- Add a row for every single idea. Put the picture on the left by tapping the picture box, and write the words on the right in short sentences.
- Watch the hints under each row. They flag long sentences, capitals and jargon words, and suggest a plainer alternative. They are hints only and never block you.
- Mark a row as a section heading when you start a new part of the document. Headings are larger, bold, and carry no image.
- Choose 16, 18 or 20 point text, then use Reading mode to read the document one row at a time on screen, with optional read aloud. Reading mode is free and unlimited.
- Pick A4 or Letter and click Print document for a paginated file with the title in the header of every page and page numbers in the footer.

An honest note about testing
A tool can apply the layout rules of the Easy Read format, and this one does. It cannot tell you whether your readers understand your document. The final step of good Easy Read practice is user testing: read the draft with people with intellectual disability, ask them what each page means in their own words, and change anything that does not land.
