Free for personal use. Free tier PDFs carry one small light grey line at the foot of every page reading "Created free at ZillaKit.com". Premium removes that line and includes a commercial licence, so you can sell or publish the large print books you make here.
How to use the Large Print Maker
- Paste your text, upload a plain .txt file, or upload a Word .docx document. Everything is read in the browser, so the manuscript never leaves your device.
- Add an optional title, then choose a page size: A4 or US Letter for handouts, or a 6 x 9 in or 8.5 x 11 in book interior with mirrored inside margins.
- Set the text size between 18pt and 30pt, pick 1.5 or double line spacing, and choose black on white, black on cream, or white on black.
- Check the live preview, which shows the first pages exactly as they will be laid out, along with an estimated page count.
- Click "Generate large print PDF" to download a real PDF with selectable, searchable text.
Why use ZillaKit's Large Print Maker?
Most people who need large print end up enlarging a document on a photocopier or bumping the font size in a word processor, and both approaches cause problems. Photocopying a page at 200 percent crops the margins and blurs the letterforms. Simply raising the point size leaves the line spacing, margins and column width unchanged, so the text becomes cramped and much harder to track from one line to the next. This tool rebuilds the document from scratch instead. It re-flows every paragraph at your chosen point size, opens up the line spacing, keeps the text left aligned with a ragged right edge so word spacing stays even, and gives every page generous margins. The result is a genuine large print document rather than an enlargement.
It is built for the people who actually make these documents: families printing a recipe or a letter for a relative with low vision, aged care and disability support staff producing readable activity sheets, teachers preparing accessible worksheets, libraries reformatting reading material, and independent publishers laying out large print editions for print on demand. The book interior presets add a mirrored inside gutter that grows with the page count, which is exactly what print on demand services expect, plus centred page numbers in the footer. Output is a real PDF with selectable text, not an image, so it stays searchable, screen reader friendly and sharp at any zoom level. Everything runs locally in your browser using JavaScript, with no upload, no signup and no watching your manuscript disappear into someone else's server.
What counts as large print?
Large print guidance published by low vision and blindness organisations is broadly consistent, and this tool follows it. Body text should be at least 18pt, with 18pt to 20pt treated as standard large print and 24pt and above often described as giant print. Line spacing should be increased to roughly 1.5 times the normal amount so readers can find the start of the next line. Text should be left aligned with a ragged right edge, because justified text creates uneven rivers of white space that are difficult to scan. Contrast between text and background should be high, which is why black on white, black on cream and white on black are the three schemes offered here. A clean typeface with clearly distinguishable characters is preferred, which is why Atkinson Hyperlegible is the default. ZillaKit is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or certified by any accessibility organisation, standards body or publisher. These are widely recommended formatting practices, applied automatically.
FAQ
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. The text, the .txt file and the .docx file are all read and laid out inside your browser using JavaScript, and the PDF is built on your device. Nothing is transmitted to ZillaKit or to any other server, which matters when the document is an unpublished manuscript, a medical letter or a private record.
Will the PDF have real text or just pictures of text?
Real text. The PDF is generated with proper font embedding, so every word stays selectable, searchable and copyable, and screen readers and text to speech tools can read it. That also keeps the file small and perfectly sharp at any zoom level.
Can I use this to make a large print book for Kindle Direct Publishing?
Yes. Choose one of the book interior presets, which apply a mirrored inside gutter that widens automatically as the page count grows, along with centred footer page numbers. Free tier PDFs carry a small "Created free at ZillaKit.com" line at the foot of each page, and Premium removes that line and adds a commercial licence for selling or publishing your work.
What font is used, and why?
Atkinson Hyperlegible is the default because its letterforms were designed to be told apart at a glance, which reduces the confusion between characters such as capital I, lower case l and the digit 1. Helvetica is available as a familiar, neutral alternative. If the Atkinson font file cannot be downloaded, the tool quietly falls back to Helvetica and says so under the preview.
Which file types can I upload?
Plain text files (.txt and .md) and Word documents (.docx). Word documents are converted in the browser, keeping paragraph breaks, headings and list items. Older .doc files, PDFs and Pages documents are not supported, so open those in a word processor and save or paste the text first.
How large a document can it handle?
Full length manuscripts of many thousands of paragraphs are fine. The layout work is broken into small chunks so the page stays responsive while it runs, and a status line shows progress on very long documents.
