How to format a book for KDP with the Paperback Typesetter

1. Paste your manuscript, or upload a .txt or .docx file. Everything is read inside your browser, so an unpublished novel never leaves your device.
2. Check the detected chapter list and untick anything that is not really a heading. Lines beginning with Chapter, Prologue, Epilogue or Part are found automatically, along with short title-cased lines that sit alone between blank lines.
3. Enter the book title and author, edit the copyright page if you want, then choose a trim size (5 x 8, 5.25 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5 or 6 x 9 inches), a body size from 10.5 pt to 12 pt, line spacing, and one of three typographic themes.
4. Click Typeset book. The layout engine wraps and justifies every line, fixes widows and orphans, builds the front matter, opens each chapter a third of the way down a fresh page, and works out the inside gutter from the finished page count.
5. Read the page count, word count and estimated spine width, flick through the preview, then download the interior PDF and the matching EPUB.

Why use ZillaKit's paperback interior formatter?

Most authors reach the end of a manuscript and discover that the hard part is only starting. A word processor will happily print a document, but it will not give you the mirrored inside margin that a perfect-bound paperback needs, it will not put the author name on the left-hand page and the book title on the right, and it will not stop a single stranded line of a paragraph from falling to the top of the next page. Paying for desktop publishing software or a dedicated Mac application solves that, and this tool solves it for nothing, in a browser tab, on any operating system.

The engine is a real typesetter rather than a print stylesheet. Every word is measured against the embedded book font, lines are broken greedily to the exact text width, and justification is achieved by distributing space between words instead of stretching the letters. The final line of each paragraph is left aligned the way it should be, first lines are indented by 0.3 inches except immediately after a heading or a scene break, and widow and orphan control refuses to leave fewer than two lines of a paragraph stranded at the top or bottom of a page. Chapter openings drop about a third of the way down a fresh page with a decorative rule, and you can force them onto right-hand pages with a blank verso inserted automatically, exactly as traditional publishers do.

Margins follow the standard printing requirements. Outside, top and bottom margins are held at half an inch and six tenths of an inch, while the inside gutter is chosen from the published bracket table by final page count: 0.375 inches up to 150 pages, 0.5 inches to 300, 0.625 inches to 500, 0.75 inches to 700 and 0.875 inches beyond that. Because the gutter changes the text width, which changes the page count, which can change the gutter again, the layout is quietly run more than once until the bracket settles. The finished statistics include the estimated spine width on both white and cream stock, so you can start the cover while the interior is still warm.

Nothing is uploaded. The font files come from a public code network, the PDF is assembled on your own machine with embedded, selectable, searchable text, and the EPUB is zipped in the same browser tab. There is no account, no watermark across the pages, and no limit on how many times you typeset a book. ZillaKit is not affiliated with Amazon or Kindle Direct Publishing; the trim sizes and margin brackets are simply the industry norms that print-on-demand services expect.

Frequently asked questions

What can this version handle, and what can it not?

Version 1 is built for prose: novels, novellas, memoirs, short story collections and nonfiction without figures. It does not place images, tables, footnotes, endnotes, indexes or multi-column layouts, and it uses one typographic scheme per theme rather than letting you style individual elements. Chapters are found from headings in the text. If your book needs pictures or footnotes, this is not the right tool yet.

Is my manuscript uploaded anywhere?

No. The pasted text, the .txt file and the .docx file are all read and laid out inside your browser with JavaScript, and both the PDF and the EPUB are built on your device. Nothing is transmitted to ZillaKit or to anyone else, which matters when the file is an unpublished manuscript.

How is the inside gutter calculated?

From the finished page count, using the standard bracket table that print-on-demand paperbacks require: 0.375 inches for 24 to 150 pages, 0.5 inches for 151 to 300, 0.625 inches for 301 to 500, 0.75 inches for 501 to 700 and 0.875 inches for 701 to 828. Since widening the gutter narrows the text and can add pages, the layout is run again automatically until the bracket stops changing. Books under 24 pages or over 828 pages fall outside the printable range and the tool says so.

Which font is used and what happens if it fails to load?

The body face is EB Garamond, an open-licence revival of a classic book serif, embedded in the PDF in regular, italic and bold. The Modern theme sets chapter titles in Inter. If the font files cannot be fetched, the tool falls back to the PDF standard Times faces, tells you in the status line, and lays out the book correctly using those metrics instead.

Does the EPUB match the paperback?

It carries the same content: a title page, a copyright page, a navigation document and one XHTML file per chapter, with scene breaks and italics preserved, wrapped as a standard EPUB 3 archive. It does not carry the print layout, because reflowable ebooks deliberately have no fixed pages, margins or running heads. That is the correct behaviour for an ebook.

Will a very long manuscript freeze my browser?

No. A hundred thousand word manuscript is laid out in small chunks with a progress bar, so the tab stays responsive throughout. Very long books simply take a little longer to draw into the PDF, and the status line keeps you posted.

Can I sell the books I typeset here?

Typesetting and the preview are free and unlimited. Downloads are covered by the free daily allowance, and free-tier files carry one small line on the copyright page reading "Typeset free at ZillaKit.com". Premium removes that line and includes the commercial licence for selling and publishing your work.

Is this a free Vellum alternative?

It covers the same core job for straight prose: a properly typeset interior with real margins, running heads, chapter openings and a matching ebook, without a purchase and without a specific operating system. It is deliberately narrower in scope, so if you need custom ornaments, image placement or fine per-element control, a paid desktop application will still serve you better.

Why is the tool easier to use on a desktop?

It works on a phone, but you will be reading page previews at reduced scale and editing a long manuscript in a small box. A laptop or desktop screen makes the settings and the preview much easier to judge.
