Two ways to break a document apart

The first mode extracts page ranges. You type something like 1-3,5 and get one new PDF containing exactly those pages. The second mode ignores the range box entirely and turns every page into its own file, then packs the whole lot into a single ZIP archive so one click gets you everything. Which one you want usually depends on whether you are pulling a few pages out or breaking a bundle into its parts.

Where this comes up

  • An accountant asks for the two pages of a bank statement that show a particular transaction, not the eleven page statement.
  • A rental application wants payslips as separate attachments, so a four payslip bundle becomes four files.
  • A real estate contract arrives as one long scan and the tenant only needs the signed schedule.
  • A teacher has a 30 page worksheet pack and wants one PDF per student activity for an upload to Google Classroom or Canvas.
  • A conference programme needs its abstract pages pulled out for a separate handout.

How the range box is read

Your text is split on commas, and each piece is checked on its own. A piece that looks like a single number becomes that one page. A piece that looks like two numbers with a hyphen becomes the run between them, and the order you write matters: 2-5 gives pages 2, 3, 4, 5 while 5-2 gives 5, 4, 3, 2 in that order. Pages are counted from 1, not 0. Anything outside the document, anything negative and anything that is not a number stops the job and shows a message telling you the valid upper bound. Repeats are allowed, so 1,1,4 produces a three page file with page 1 appearing twice. Once the list is built, pdf-lib copies those page objects into a fresh empty document in the order listed, and the result is saved straight to your downloads.

Worked example

Open a twelve page file named report.pdf. The summary under the drop zone shows the name, the page count and the size. Type 3-5,1 into the range box and press the split button: you receive report-split.pdf containing four pages in the order 3, 4, 5, 1, and the status line reads that four pages were extracted. Switch to the every page option instead and you receive report-pages.zip holding report-page-01.pdf through to report-page-12.pdf. The numbers are padded to match the width of the page count, so a document of 120 pages would give page-001 upward.

What it will not do

Password protected files cannot be opened at all and will report an error rather than prompting for the key. Bookmarks, the document outline and any interactive form structure belong to the original file and are generally not carried into the new one, since only the page objects are copied. Internal links that pointed at a page you left behind have nothing to point at any more. There is no preview of the pages here, so if you are not sure which page is which, check the file in a reader first. The every page mode builds a complete PDF document per page before zipping, which is fine for tens of pages and slow for hundreds. A warning appears for files over 100 MB, because the bytes are held in memory more than once. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded to a server. Splitting costs nothing. When the free credit is spent, a brief rewarded ad restores it, and the output carries no watermark.

If a different job is what you actually need

To remove a handful of pages and keep the rest as one document, Delete PDF Pages is more direct than extracting everything else. Going the other way, Merge PDF joins files back together. Sideways pages should be corrected with Rotate PDF before splitting, and an oversized result can go through Compress PDF. When you want pictures rather than pages, see PDF to JPG for whole page images or Extract PDF Images for the embedded originals. For editable text, PDF to Word is the right destination. The ZIP this tool produces can be opened with Extract ZIP, and Create ZIP will bundle your own selection of files.

Questions that come up

What range syntax does the box accept?

Single pages and hyphenated runs separated by commas, for example 1-3,5,8-10. Counting starts at page 1, repeats are allowed, and a descending run such as 9-7 keeps that reversed order in the output.

How do I get one file per page?

Choose the second option, every page as a separate PDF. The tool builds a one page document for each page, names them with a zero padded number, and delivers the set as a single ZIP archive.

Why did my range get rejected?

A range is refused if any number falls outside the document, if a piece contains characters other than digits and a hyphen, or if the box is empty. The message tells you the highest page number available.

Do bookmarks and form fields survive the split?

Usually not. Only the page content is copied into the new document, so an outline, document level metadata and interactive form structure are typically left behind.

Can I split a file that asks for a password?

No. Encrypted documents cannot be parsed here. Open the file where you know the password, save a copy without protection, and split that copy.
