Zodiac descriptions are traditional astrological lore, offered here for relaxation, reflection and entertainment purposes only. They are not factual, medical or predictive claims about you.

First, the honest bit

Astrology is entertainment and cultural history. There is no predictive basis to it and no scientific evidence that the position of the Sun, the planets or the stars at your birth influences your personality, your relationships or what happens to you. When astrologers have been tested under controlled conditions, including a double-blind study published in Nature in 1985, matching birth charts to personality profiles did not perform better than chance. Sign descriptions also tend to work through what psychologists call the Barnum effect: statements broad enough that almost anyone reads them and thinks, that is me.

None of that makes star signs worthless to know about. They are a shared vocabulary that turns up in conversation, in memes and in three thousand years of art and literature. Take your result in that spirit, and the rest of this page explains exactly how it was produced.

The twelve tropical date ranges used here

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which divides the ecliptic into twelve equal 30 degree slices starting from the March equinox. Those slices map onto the calendar as follows, and these are the exact boundaries this calculator applies:

  • Aries 21 March to 19 April, Taurus 20 April to 20 May, Gemini 21 May to 20 June.
  • Cancer 21 June to 22 July, Leo 23 July to 22 August, Virgo 23 August to 22 September.
  • Libra 23 September to 22 October, Scorpio 23 October to 21 November, Sagittarius 22 November to 21 December.
  • Capricorn 22 December to 19 January, Aquarius 20 January to 18 February, Pisces 19 February to 20 March.

How the calculator decides

The logic is deliberately simple. Your date is split into a month and a day, and the twelve ranges are checked in order until one matches: the test is whether the day falls on or after the start date in the opening month, or on or before the end date in the closing month. Capricorn straddles New Year, so it gets a wrap-around test accepting late December and early January alike. Your birth year and time of day are ignored.

The cusp note is a separate check. After a sign is chosen, the tool flags your date if it falls on the first or second day of that sign, or on the last or second-to-last day. When it does, a line appears telling you the boundary is nearby and that other sources may place you in the neighbouring sign. It is a prompt to check, not a verdict.

A worked example

Enter 22 July 1994. The check reaches Cancer at 21 June to 22 July, sees that July matches the closing month and 22 is not past the end day, and stops there. Because 22 July is the final day of the range, the cusp note appears too. The panel shows the Cancer glyph, Water as the element, Cardinal as the modality and the Moon as the ruling planet, with Scorpio, Pisces and Taurus listed as easy rapport and Aries and Libra as more effort. Change it to 1 August and you get Leo, Fire, Fixed, ruled by the Sun, with no cusp note.

Your sign is not the constellation behind it

This surprises people, and it is the most genuinely interesting fact here. The tropical zodiac is anchored to the seasons, not the stars: 0 degrees Aries is wherever the Sun sits at the March equinox. The ranges were fixed roughly two thousand years ago, when that point did line up with the constellation Aries. Since then the Earth's axis has been wobbling, a motion called precession of the equinoxes that completes a circuit in about 25,800 years and shifts the reference point by roughly one degree every 72 years. The drift now amounts to nearly a full sign, so an Aries by date most likely had the Sun in front of Pisces.

Two wrinkles follow. Indian astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which tracks the constellations and so gives many people a different sign. And the constellations as astronomers formally define them are unequal in size, with thirteen touching the ecliptic, including Ophiuchus. That is where the recurring news story about a thirteenth star sign comes from. It is not new, and it does not change the tropical system.

Why the boundary dates move between years

A year is not a whole number of days. The Earth takes about 365.2422 days to return to the equinox, so the moment the Sun crosses into Aries drifts about six hours later each year and jumps back when a leap day is inserted. That is why the March equinox can land on the 19th, 20th or 21st, and why any fixed table like the one above can be a day out for a birthday sitting on a boundary. Time zone matters too: the crossing happens at one instant worldwide, and that instant can fall on different calendar dates in Perth and in London.

Elements, modalities and rulers

These groupings are why compatibility lists look the way they do. The four elements split the signs into fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). The three modalities describe position within a season: cardinal signs begin one, fixed signs sit in its middle, mutable signs close it out. Ruling planets follow the modern set, assigning Uranus to Aquarius, Neptune to Pisces and Pluto to Scorpio, where older texts used Saturn, Jupiter and Mars.

When to use a different tool

A sun sign is one placement out of dozens. For moon and rising signs and a full set of planetary positions, use the Birth Chart calculator, or turn one into wall art with the Birth Chart Poster. For the animal sign attached to your birth year, see the Chinese Zodiac. People also pair this with the Moon Phase calculator, Numerology, a daily Tarot Card Draw, or the plainly factual Age Calculator.

Questions

Is astrology real?

Not in any testable sense. There is no known mechanism by which distant objects could shape a personality, and controlled studies have not found astrologers performing better than chance at matching charts to people. It is best enjoyed as culture, storytelling and a conversation starter rather than as information about your future.

Is my star sign the constellation the Sun was really in?

Usually not. The Western date ranges are tied to the seasons and were set about two thousand years ago. Precession has since shifted the sky by nearly a whole sign, so the Sun on your birthday was most likely in front of the neighbouring constellation.

Why do different websites give me a different sign?

Because you were born near a boundary. The Sun crosses between signs at one exact instant, which drifts by about six hours a year and shifts with leap years and time zones, so fixed date tables disagree by a day at the edges. Your birth year, time and location settle it.

What does the cusp note actually mean?

It appears when your date falls within one day of either end of the range. It is a flag telling you the boundary is close enough that the answer depends on details this calculator does not use, not a claim that you belong to two signs at once.

Is my date of birth stored anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded to a server. The date is not logged, saved or remembered once you leave the page, and the tool is free to use.
