Mazes for Early Finishers
For primary teachers who need something ready for the three students who finish every task in half the time. Mazes are quiet, need no marking, and take about fifteen minutes to prepare a term's worth. The trick is matching the difficulty so they are absorbing rather than trivial.

Every class has them. The task takes twenty minutes and three students are done in eight, and what they do with the remaining twelve minutes decides whether the rest of the lesson is calm. A drawer of graded maze sheets solves this cheaply. It is not enrichment in any deep sense, and this guide will be honest about that, but it is quiet, self-directed, needs no explanation and needs no marking.
What actually makes a maze hard
People assume maze difficulty is just size. Size matters, but three other factors matter more.
- Branching. A maze with many junctions offers more wrong turns per step. A long winding corridor with few choices is slow but not difficult.
- Dead end length. Short dead ends are spotted immediately. Long dead ends that wander for twenty cells before terminating are what make a maze genuinely frustrating, because the student commits and then has to backtrack.
- Path directness. If the solution path runs broadly from entrance to exit, an intuitive solver will find it by heading roughly the right way. If the solution loops back on itself, that intuition fails.
- Cell size on paper. A 30 by 30 maze printed on A4 has cells around six millimetres wide. That is hard to trace with a pencil for anyone, and impossible for a student with fine motor difficulties. Difficulty from cramped printing is not useful difficulty.
Size is the lever you actually control in most generators, and it correlates with all of the above, so it remains the practical dial. Just remember that doubling the grid dimension roughly quadruples the number of cells and much more than quadruples the solving time.
Matching difficulty to year level
These are starting points, not rules. Print one of each band, try them on your actual class, and adjust.
Foundation to Year 1
Small grids, roughly 8 by 8 or under, with thick walls and wide paths. At this age the activity is as much about pencil control and following a line as it is about problem solving. Expect a minute or two per maze. If a student is drawing through walls, the paths are too narrow rather than the maze being too hard.
Years 2 and 3
Around 10 by 10 to 14 by 14. Students start backtracking deliberately here rather than guessing, which is the point at which a maze becomes a thinking task. Two to four minutes each.
Years 4 and 5
Around 16 by 16 to 22 by 22. Most students develop a strategy at this stage, usually working backwards from the exit, and it is worth naming that strategy out loud once to the class because it transfers to other problems. Five to eight minutes each.
Year 6 and lower secondary
25 by 25 and up, and this is where you will want the largest paper and the best print quality you have. A big maze can absorb fifteen minutes. For students who race through even these, sudoku is a better use of the slot because it has an actual logical structure to reason about.
Building a term pack
The efficient approach is to make the whole set once rather than generating a maze whenever you need one.
- Pick three difficulty bands that cover your class, for example 10 by 10, 16 by 16 and 22 by 22.
- Generate eight to ten mazes in each band with the Maze Generator. Ten weeks of one per week per band is a full term with room to spare.
- Save each as a PDF rather than printing straight away. That gives you a reusable master.
- Combine each band into a single file with Merge PDF so you have three documents instead of thirty.
- Print one copy of each band, check the print quality on the smallest cells, then print the run.
- File them in three labelled trays or folders. Label them by something neutral like colour or shape rather than "easy" and "hard", because students will read the label and pick by pride rather than by fit.
Print single sided. A maze on the back of another maze means you cannot hand out one puzzle without handing out two, and students will flip.
Running it without it becoming a reward system
The failure mode is that finishing fast becomes the goal, and quality of work drops because students are racing to get to the fun sheet. Two small habits prevent this.
First, require the finished work to be checked before the puzzle is available. A ten second glance is enough, and it removes the incentive to rush.
Second, let slower workers access the same pack at other times. If mazes only ever go to the fastest students, they become a visible status marker. Keeping the tray open at the end of the day or on wet weather breaks defuses that entirely.
Some teachers put the pack on a clipboard by the door and let students take one whenever they have genuinely finished. That works well in classes with established routines and badly in classes without them.
Printing notes specific to mazes
Mazes are pure line art, which means they are unusually sensitive to two things. Low toner turns walls grey and a grey wall reads as a gap, which makes the maze unsolvable rather than hard. And scaling below about 90 per cent thins the lines enough to cause the same problem on some laser printers. If a maze prints faintly, reprint it rather than handing it out, because a student who hits an unsolvable maze concludes they are bad at mazes.
Photocopying a maze master is generally fine for one generation and visibly degraded by the third. Print from the PDF each time if you can.
Honest limits
A maze does not teach curriculum content. It is not literacy, it is not numeracy, and presenting it as either is overselling it. What it genuinely offers is a short, low stakes exercise in persistence: commit to a path, discover it fails, backtrack, try again, without any social cost to being wrong. That is a real thing, and it is a reasonable use of twelve spare minutes, but it is not a substitute for a planned extension task.
If you have a student who is finishing early every single lesson across every subject, a maze pack is treating a symptom. The underlying issue is that the work is not pitched for them, and that needs a conversation about extension or acceleration rather than a drawer of puzzles.
A few students also genuinely dislike mazes, usually those with visual tracking difficulties, and will find the activity stressful rather than restful. Keep a second option in the same tray, a word search or a blank page for drawing, so nobody is stuck with the one format.
