The two fit modes, with real numbers

Every export from this page is exactly 1080 wide and 1920 tall, a 9:16 rectangle. What changes is how your picture is made to fit that shape.

Crop to fill takes the largest 9:16 region it can from the centre of your photo and stretches it to the full frame. Feed it a typical 4032 x 3024 phone shot and the maths is brutal: it keeps the full 3024 pixel height but only 1701 pixels of width, so roughly 58 per cent of your horizontal framing is discarded. Anything at the left or right edge is gone. That 1701 x 3024 slice is then scaled down to 1080 x 1920, which is a genuine reduction, so the result stays sharp.

Fit with padding keeps the entire picture and fills the leftover space with the colour you choose. The same 4032 x 3024 photo lands 1080 wide and 810 tall, sitting in the middle with 555 pixels of colour above and 555 below. Nothing is cropped away, but your photo occupies only the middle 42 per cent of the screen.

A rule of thumb: crop to fill for photography and anything immersive, fit with padding for a landscape shot, a screenshot, a chart or a product image where cutting the edges would destroy the meaning. Matching the padding colour to a dominant colour in the image, rather than leaving it black, makes a padded Story look deliberate instead of lazy.

The centre crop is fixed

This is the biggest constraint to understand. The crop window is always centred, and there is no way to slide it up or down. For a portrait where the subject sits in the middle, that is exactly right. For a group shot where the person you care about stands off to one side, or a landscape where the interesting part is the bottom third, the centre crop will fail you.

The workaround takes ten seconds: open the crop tool, set the ratio dropdown to 9:16, drag the box over the part you actually want, export, then bring that result here to be sized to exactly 1080 x 1920. A 9:16 crop arrives with nothing further to discard, so the framing you chose is the framing you keep.

Leave room for the interface

A Story is never shown clean. Your profile picture, name and timestamp sit across the top, and the reply field, share icons and any link sticker occupy the bottom. Roughly the top 250 pixels and the bottom 250 pixels of that 1920 pixel canvas are at risk of being covered or crowded, and the exact amount shifts between phones and between the app's own layout updates.

Treat the middle 1080 x 1420 region as your working area. Headlines, faces, prices and calls to action belong there. Background texture and empty sky can run to the edges. If you are adding a swipe-up style link, keep the bottom fifth clear entirely.

Upscaling, and why some Stories look soft

If your source is smaller than the crop needs, the tool enlarges it using high quality smoothing. That is the best a browser can do, and it is still interpolation: new pixels are invented by averaging neighbours, so fine detail turns mushy and text gets fuzzy edges. A 1080 x 1350 portrait post, for instance, is cropped to 759 x 1350 and then blown up by about 1.4 times on the way to 1080 x 1920.

Aim for a source at least 1080 pixels on its short side, and preferably larger, so the tool is always shrinking rather than stretching. Instagram then re-compresses whatever you upload anyway, so starting from a clean, correctly sized file is the only part of the chain you control.

Output format and file size

JPEG is encoded at a fixed quality of 0.92, which for a photographic Story at this size usually produces a few hundred kilobytes. PNG is lossless and will be several times larger for the same photo, with no visible benefit after the app re-encodes it. Choose PNG only for flat graphics, screenshots or text-heavy cards where JPEG artefacts around letters would be noticeable. Note that the padding colour is painted onto the canvas in both formats, so a PNG export is not transparent.

Can I choose which part of the photo gets cropped?

Not on this page. The crop is taken from the centre with no way to reposition it. Crop to a 9:16 shape first in the crop tool if your subject is off to one side.
