The conversion pairs on offer
Drop a file in and the format list fills with only the targets that make sense for it. The full set is fixed, and it is worth knowing before you start:
- DOCX to PDF, ODT, TXT or RTF. DOC to PDF, DOCX, ODT, TXT or RTF.
- ODT to PDF, DOCX, TXT or RTF. RTF to PDF, DOCX, ODT or TXT. TXT to PDF, ODT or DOCX.
- XLSX to PDF, CSV or ODS. XLS to PDF, XLSX, CSV or ODS. ODS to PDF, XLSX or CSV. CSV to PDF, XLSX or ODS.
- PPTX to PDF or ODP. PPT to PDF, PPTX or ODP. ODP to PDF or PPTX.
- PDF to DOCX only.
There is no path from a spreadsheet to a document or from a presentation to a word processor file, because those conversions have no sensible meaning. A slide deck is not a sequence of paragraphs.
Fixed layout versus reflowable, and why it decides everything
Every format here falls into one of two camps. Reflowable formats, such as DOCX, ODT, RTF and TXT, store content and let the software decide where lines and pages break. Fixed-layout formats, essentially PDF, store exact positions and nothing else.
Going from reflowable to fixed is easy. The engine already knows the structure, so it just lays it out and records where everything landed. This is why anything to PDF is dependable.
Going from fixed back to reflowable is guesswork. The PDF to DOCX path has to infer paragraphs, headings and reading order from coordinates on a page. It handles text-based PDFs exported from a word processor reasonably well and struggles badly with scans, multi-column layouts and tables. Notes on each family
Documents. DOCX to ODT and back is generally safe for text, styles and images. Expect trouble with tracked changes, comments, complex numbered-list definitions and content controls, which do not have exact equivalents in every format. Converting to TXT discards everything except the characters, which is sometimes exactly what you want for cleaning up a messy file.
Spreadsheets. Converting a workbook to CSV flattens it hard. CSV holds one sheet of plain values, so a multi-sheet workbook loses all but one sheet, and every formula becomes the value it was showing. Formatting, charts and merged cells vanish. Going the other way, CSV to XLSX gives you a real workbook you can style. Rendering to PDF follows the print settings saved in the file, which is covered on the Excel to PDF page.
Presentations. PPTX to PDF produces one page per slide and is very reliable for handouts and emailing a deck to someone who will not open it in the right app. Animations, transitions, embedded video and audio do not survive, since a PDF page cannot move. Speaker notes are not included. PPTX to ODP and back generally holds text, images and slide layouts, but custom fonts, SmartArt-style diagrams and unusual effects may shift.
Fonts. A font the engine does not have gets substituted, which changes line lengths and can push text off the edge of a box. Stick to common fonts if appearance matters.
The upload path, step by step
This is not a browser-only tool. No browser tab can host a full office suite, so what you drop in travels to a conversion service for processing. The page itself only uploads the file and polls for a result.
When you press Convert, the file is posted to the conversion endpoint along with the target format you chose, and a progress bar tracks the upload. The server checks that the pair you asked for is on its allowlist and rejects anything else, then queues the job. Two conversions run at a time, and the page polls for status, showing how many jobs are ahead of you, then a converting percentage, then done. Any single conversion is stopped after three minutes so one difficult file cannot block the queue. Uploads are capped at 50 MB and larger files are refused before processing begins.
Retention is stated above the tool as deletion within the hour. Internally, each job expires an hour after it is created, and what you sent is thrown away the moment your output exists.
When to reach for a specific tool instead
The single-purpose pages exist because they explain the pitfalls of one job properly. Use Word to PDF for documents, PowerPoint to PDF for decks, and Excel to PDF for spreadsheets. Come here when your pair is less common, for instance ODP to PPTX, RTF to ODT, XLS to XLSX or CSV to ODS.
Questions
Why can I not convert a PDF into Excel or PowerPoint?
PDF can only become DOCX here. Reconstructing a spreadsheet or a slide deck from page coordinates is far less reliable than reconstructing a text document, so it is not offered rather than offered badly.
Does my file leave my device?
Yes. It is uploaded to a conversion service, run through LibreOffice there, and handed back to you as a download. No part of the work happens in the browser, and the notice above the tool gives the deletion window as one hour.
What is the size limit and is there a time limit?
Uploads are capped at 50 MB. Each conversion is also given three minutes on the server, so a very large or complex file may time out even if it is under the size cap.
Will my slide animations survive a PPTX to PDF conversion?
No. A PDF is static, so you get one page per slide in its final state. Animations, transitions and embedded media are dropped.
Why did my multi-sheet workbook lose sheets when I converted to CSV?
CSV is a single flat table by definition. It cannot hold more than one sheet, and it stores no formulas or formatting. Convert to XLSX or ODS if you need the whole workbook.
