Pages that arrive the wrong way up

Most sideways PDFs are not really broken. A multifunction printer scans a page that was fed in landscape, a phone scanning app guesses the wrong edge, or a colleague exports a spreadsheet that lands rotated a quarter turn. Viewers such as Acrobat Reader, Preview and Chrome will spin the page on screen for you, but that view is temporary and the next person who opens the file sees it sideways again. This page changes the stored orientation instead, so the fix travels with the document.

Common examples: a two page rental agreement where only the signature page is sideways, a stack of receipts scanned upside down for a tax return, a council form scanned in landscape that needs to print portrait, and a set of lecture slides rotated the wrong way before being emailed to a class.

What the tool changes inside the file

Two libraries do the work. The pdf.js renderer draws a small preview of every page into its own canvas, sized so the longest edge is about 160 pixels, which is why a long document takes a moment to fill the grid. Your clicks do not redraw anything at that stage; the thumbnail is simply turned with a CSS transform so you can check the result quickly. When you press the download button, pdf-lib reads the page object, takes its existing rotation angle, adds the amount you asked for, wraps the sum back into the 0 to 359 range and writes it to the page. Nothing is rasterised, recompressed or re-encoded, so text stays selectable, vector artwork stays sharp and the file size barely moves.

Worked example

Open a three page scan called contract-scan.pdf. Page two was fed sideways, and its stored rotation is 0. Press the right arrow under thumbnail two once. The thumbnail spins 90 degrees on screen, the other two pages are untouched, and the output field has already filled itself in as contract-scan-rotated.pdf. Press Download Rotated PDF and page two is written with a rotation of 90 while pages one and three keep their original value. Press the right arrow four times instead and the total wraps back to 0, which is the same as pressing Reset all.

Limits worth knowing before you start

• Angles are restricted to quarter turns. There is no slider for a one degree tilt, because the PDF page rotation entry only accepts 0, 90, 180 and 270.
• Encrypted or password protected files cannot be opened, and you get a message asking you to remove the password in the application that created the file.
• Files over 100 MB trigger a warning. They will often still work, but the whole document is held in memory twice, once as raw bytes and once as a parsed object, so a phone with little free memory may stall.
• Every page gets a thumbnail, so a 400 page report renders 400 canvases. That is slow and memory hungry on a modest laptop.
• A wide thumbnail turned on its side can look slightly cropped in the preview grid, because the box around it does not grow. The saved file is unaffected.
• Nothing else about the document changes. Pages are not reordered, removed, cropped or compressed here.

Pricing and privacy

Access is free. A short rewarded ad appears when your credit runs out, and there is no signup, no watermark and no page limit. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded to a server. That matters when the document is a contract, a medical letter or an identity document. Both libraries load from a public CDN when the page opens, so you need a connection for that first load, after which the work itself is local.

Other PDF jobs, other pages

Common questions

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Only the page orientation value is rewritten. Text, fonts and images are copied across untouched, so nothing is recompressed and the file size stays close to what it was.

Can I turn a single page and leave the rest alone?

Yes. Each thumbnail carries its own pair of arrows, so you can correct one sideways page in a twenty page document without touching the others.

Why can it not straighten a page by a few degrees?

The PDF format stores page rotation as one of four values: 0, 90, 180 or 270. Anything finer would mean redrawing the page content, which this tool deliberately avoids.

It says my file is password protected. What now?

Open the document in the application or reader that has the password, save an unprotected copy, then bring that copy here. Encrypted files cannot be parsed without the key.

How large a document can I open?

There is no hard cap, but a warning appears above 100 MB and every page is rendered as a preview thumbnail. Very long or very heavy documents are limited by the memory your browser can spare.
