How to remove an image background
- Drop a JPG, PNG or WEBP image into the box above, or click to browse your device.
- Click Remove background. The first run downloads the AI model (about 40 MB, cached for next time).
- Watch the before and after preview appear side by side on a checkerboard so you can see the transparency.
- Optionally tick Fill background with a colour and pick a solid colour to replace the transparency.
- Click Download PNG to save the cut-out with a transparent (or filled) background.
Why use ZillaKit's Background Remover?
This tool removes backgrounds entirely on your own device. The AI segmentation model is downloaded once and then runs inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your photos are never uploaded to a server, never stored, and never seen by anyone but you. That is a genuine privacy advantage over popular online background removers that send every image you upload to their cloud. Because the processing is local, there is no queue, no watermark, no signup and no per-image fee — you get full-resolution transparent PNG output for free. It works for portraits, products, pets, logos and profile pictures, and it handles hair and fuzzy edges far better than manual selection. You can keep the background transparent for use in design tools and presentations, or fill it with any solid colour for passport-style photos, thumbnails and marketplace listings. Everything runs on desktop and mobile browsers that support modern WebAssembly, and once the model is cached, each new image is processed almost instantly.
FAQ
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The background removal runs 100% in your browser using an AI model compiled to WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device and nothing is sent to us or any third party.
Why does the first run take longer?
The first time you use the tool it downloads the AI model, roughly 40 MB. Your browser caches it, so every image after that is processed much faster with no download.
Do I get a transparent background?
Yes. The output is a PNG with a real transparent background, shown against a checkerboard in the preview. You can also fill the background with any solid colour before downloading.
What image formats can I use?
You can drop in JPG, PNG or WEBP images. The result is always exported as a PNG so that transparency is preserved.
My browser says it is not supported. What now?
The AI engine needs a modern browser with WebAssembly SIMD support. Update to a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, or try on a desktop computer, which usually has more memory for large images.
Is there a limit on image size?
There is no hard limit, but very large images use a lot of memory. If a huge photo fails, resize it to around 2000 pixels on the long edge and try again.
